English iris with Mrs Sinkins

The deep blues of these irises with their subtly mottled petals provide the perfect contrast to the brilliant greens and whites of the pink Mrs Sinkins. In the background of this piece is the blue of anchusa. I have purposely kept a softer feel to this background plant, painting on silk and allowing the colours to merge. As with all the fabrics I use, the silk is then cut and placed so that the different angles of the weave create contrast of light and shade. The clean cut edges also provide a transition between the soft painting and bold foreground creating a feeling of great spacial depth with the textile collage.
